Sustainability Policy

In business for more than 65 years, Aitken Spence Printing not only strives to be a high-quality printing & packaging services provider to customers but also prides itself on being a good corporate citizen. We continuously strive to find sustainable resources & efficient technology, new processes & systems and participate in a variety of environmental initiatives in order to promote and support sustainability in the printing industry in partnership with all stakeholders.

Our Philosophy

Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, thereby fulfilling the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations.

In line with these principles, Aitken Spence Printing has identified ‘Sustainable Product & Process Development’ as one of the key strategic attributes for the success of next-generation manufacturing.

Governors

Sustainability initiatives are monitored and directed by the Sustainability Committee which includes members from Senior Management and a mix of employees from other areas of the business. This dedicated interdepartmental team is tasked with researching and implementing sustainable initiatives for both the Company and its employees.

As a fully owned subsidiary of Aitken Spence PLC, we are governed by Aitken Spence Group’s integrated approach to sustainability as well.

Aitken Spence Printing is mindful of the following UN sustainable goals and has aligned its policies and procedures accordingly.

01.Sustainability Initiatives on Environment

Gold Certification of LEED for construction of the facility

Awarded by the US Green Building Council in the LEED Green building rating system & verified by the Green Building Certification Institute. The facility encompasses the following sustainability initiatives.

Daylight harvesting

Rainwater harvesting

Solid waste management system

Effluent treatment process for industrial wastewater

Certified as carbon neutral organization by CarbonNeutral ® Company

The Company has measured its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the last ten consecutive years and reduced them through internal changes and offset the excess externally through carbon offsetting in accordance with the related requirements of the Carbon Neutral Protocol.

Verification audits are carried out by a third party in accordance with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)/ World Resources Institute (WRI) GHG protocol.

Comply with ISO 14064-1 : 2018 standard

Comply with ISO 14001 : 2015 standard

All roofs have been covered with solar panels and generated energy supplied to the national grid

02.Sustainability initiatives on people management

Compliant with the labour standards, laws and regulations of Sri Lanka; a country that has signed and ratified 43 conventions and 1 protocol of the ILO, including 8 out of 10 Fundamental Conventions and 3 out of 4 Governance Conventions (Priority). Out of 43 conventions, 31 are in force.

Comply with ISO 45001 : 2018 standard

The Company complies with standards of SEDEX Member Ethical Trade Audit (SMTEA)

As Aitken Spence PLC is a signatory for the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) 10 principles, we comply with all 10 principles

All processes comply with ISO 9001 : 2015 standard

Commissioned Sri Lanka’s first Carbon Neutral 6-colour offset press

Use FSC ™ (C822399CUCOC-01.2022) certified materials for manufacturing process as per customers’ requests

Use vegetable & soy based inks for printing. These inks are naturally low in VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), non-toxic and produce fewer emission

A variety of online and digital tools allow us to provide paperless workflow alternatives to our customers

Stringent screening process is carried out in supplier selection

Reusing of materials for product packing / parcelling
